So here's the deal, our front door is currently bright red. I don't hate it. I love a bright red door actually, but I have an awkward relationship with the color red. I can't live with it. I love it in other people's houses, but you won't find it in my house. It's like your best guy friend, who's a great guy, but you could never date or marry because you're not actually compatible in large doses. Does that make any sense? Red and I - not lovers, just friends.
Before we moved in, when I had been
Remember?
I'd lived with the color in Edward's playroom for awhile, and I really loved it.
I thought it would be a nice middle ground between this look (which I LOVE):

from this post, but see also Chinoiserie Chic who also has a post on front doors today! |
and the way the house looked before it was repainted, when it was more black and white than navy, cream and red.
I took this picture LONG before I ever knew I was going to live in this house. It was obviously fate. Original post here. |
BUT when I put my painted board up to the door, I decided I didn't like it.
Wamp Wump.
Here it is poorly Photoshopped:
Again, I don't hate it. I just don't know if I love it.
I'm kind of feeling something lighter. So here are some other poorly Photoshopped options I did:

Farrow & Ball Lulworth Blue |

Valspar Pillow Mint |
Kip didn't like any of them, and I felt kind of "meh" about them as well, although I think the Lulworth Blue is the closest to what I want.
What do y'all think? Do you have suggestions? Specific paint colors would be awesomer than awesome. I want something kind of fun and inviting, that is very me (so not yellow).
My only sense of urgency is that I want to take a Christmas card picture in front of the house before it gets too cold so we can send our friends and family our change of address.
Ok y'all gimme what you got. PLEASE!!
I vote for Hague Blue! I'm kind of picky about front door colors and don't usually like anything out of the "norm". Hague blue is very classy and goes well with your house. Have a great day!

Have you tried:
ReplyDeletePalph Lauren Bellflower or Spanish Bluebell?
Or, Devine Color's Devine Swell?
I recently found Devine Color Paint and love the selection.
I love red front doors on other peoples houses also. I pinterest blue front doors and one came up Sherwin Williams Smoky Blue 7604 pinner lorena streb. I think that might be perfect because it is not the solid blue you don't seem to like but blue enough. I like blue grasscloth better than a painted blue wall because it seems to give it depth. The door almost gets lost in the darker blues.
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous home! I really like the red and I love black as well. I lived with peachy/coral for many years which is my favorite. With such a beautiful house it would be very hard to mess it up! I hope you have many happy years in your new home. I look forward to pictures.
ReplyDeleteI like the Hague Blue best of the 3 you've shown, but my favorite is the door on Chinoiserie Chic house...what color is that?
ReplyDeleteGood luck, I know you'll choose something wonderful.

I like the Hague Blue best too. It looks flat because you can't see any hardware when you photoshopped. Your inspiration picture has those fabulous pots that give the blue more oomph. Good luck in choosing.
ReplyDeleteNo question about it I love the Hague Blue. Also love the pic with the blue and white pots. Never noticed the beautiful window boxes before. Gorgeous!
ReplyDeletevery pretty colors! if you like the second one the best then it might be worth it to look at benjamin moore summer blue. it's a lot of color but i think it's so pretty! if you decide to go darker, i have used rich navy from glidden (color matched to ben moore) and it was the perfect deep blue. good luck!!
ReplyDeleteIf I may say I think you should mimic the inspiration photo...you like it so do The Hague blue, put heavier door knocker on. Replace lighting with more substantial fixtures. Add trees in planters with of course your signature blue and white containers. I think giving your whole front area a little more weight along with the deep blue color on the door would be gorgeous with your home. I love the inspiration photo and have saved it from the chinoiserie blog also! I hope you don't mind if I put my two cents in! Your home is beautiful...it was fun dreaming with you on this though...I can just see it. Keep us posted
ReplyDeleteOut of these I adore The Hague blue. I do not care for the lighter colors. Looks washed out to me. Go navy with a green tone. That way it will not look purplish in the sun.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, it's not working. How a out black on the door, and flank the door with royal blue Chippendale planters? Good luck.
ReplyDeleteYou're not gonna like it, but have you thought about black for the door? a blue-black? I understand you love blue, but the house just seems to call for a black door.
ReplyDeleteAll are beautiful but I really like the most is the dark blue.So neat and nice.
ReplyDeletequality door
All your three choices look good on your door. Have you tried combining them? If you're having a hard time picking which one, maybe you should combine them instead. It's possible to have three shades of color in your door, as long as they complement each other well.
