On Magazine Subscriptions

Morning y'all! (this is a long post, skip to the bottom for a summary if you have ADHD)

I need you to talk to me for a second about magazines.  I love them, but I have let my subscriptions lapse since we are moving.  Oprah was not too happy about this.  Her "people" are sending me collection agency notices for not renewing my subscription.  It's slightly alarming to get stuff in the mail from a collection agency and then even more so to get it from Oprah.  And do you know how hard it is to get a hold of Oprah to tell her you don't want her magazine right now?? It's impossible! Other mags do it, too, and it's very deceptive.  I wonder how many people just pay the money and subscribe for fear of a credit issue.  Just thinking out loud here.  It's something I'm going to look into.

But that's really not what I'm here today to talk about - although if anybody who reads this is close friends with Oprah could you please tell her to knock it off - I'm here today to ask you what magazines you like and how you like to get them? Ever since the loss of my beloved Southern Accents and Domino (representing both sides of my dueling design demons), I've been like a lost child wandering in the woods looking for some identity.  Also, do I go the digital route and have them delivered to me over the internets or do I continue with the ancient method of prints on glossy papers, which are then bound and hand-delivered to the box that contains papers the old folks call "mail." Talk to me y'all.

P.S. Did you see Ivanka Trump's nursery in Elle Decor?

I love it.  I love the ceiling and the whiteness and how it's so calm.  Of course, I read about it on People's Celebrity Baby Blog because I don't get Elle Decor at the moment.  I loved this little blurb:

“As impractical as it is, what I wanted for my first baby was a simple, all-white nursery,” she explains in the October 2012 issue of Elle Decor.

“Then I started reading books that said babies need color for stimulation, and I was horrified. Within a month, I'd hung one of those ugly colored mobiles off the crib.”

I'm pretty sure we can all relate to that.  I still love an all-white nursery.  I'll probably do something like that in the next house if I am ever again blessed with a little munchkin.  They can get color stimulation in the playroom. Ok, this has been a super long and wordy post.

Talk to me y'all!

  • What mags do you like?
  • How do you like to read them? Paper or digital
  • Are you being hunted by Oprah?
  • Am I going to have dumb children if I have an all-white nursery?

Okay, Go.

  1. I will ALWAYS get print magazines (hope that doesn't come back to bite me in the butt). I have my subscriptions uploaded on my iPad as well, which is lovely for traveling, but at home, I LOVE to curl up on the couch with a stack of magazines and tear out pages for inspiration.

I get too many magazines and should probs cut back on that, but my favorites are Country Living, Southern Living, and Cook's Illustrated.

I can't wait until my new issue of Elle Decor arrives so I can drool over this nursery. I just love Ivanka Trump!

  2. Maybe as an "old folk" I am being old fashioned when I say, while I enjoy the occasional visit to the online magazines, there is NOTHING as enjoyable as a newly arrived hard copy magazine that I can relax with.

My current subscriptions include: Veranda, Traditional Home, the bi-annual French Country by Hearst Magazines and House Beautiful. My all time favorite magazine was/is Southern Accents and I get melancholy just thinking about it being no longer available.

  3. Sorry not friends with Oprah:( BUT I do share your sense of loss over my beloved Southern Accents, the best magazine EVER! I miss it soo much. I love Veranda, Traditional Home (gotten much better), Town and Country and Vanity Fair. I also love the mags that come out every six months or so by Southern Accents, and of course snatch them up the minute they hit the newstands. House Beautiful is getting better......Elle Decor though they have some nice spaces, is too transitional for my taste, ditto Arch Digest. So thats my 2 cents..if you ever want to start a campaign to get Southern Accents back up and running....I am so there with you!

    Also LOVE the white nursery!!!!!

  4. I am not renewing my magazines also because I was getting too many and never reading them. I wanted to see if I really miss any and I don't.

  5. i saw that nursery too and fell in love which is odd because i usually go for color. that ceiling is killer. um mags - i get house beautiful and canadian house & home. i love lonny for online and adore is good. i let go of arch digest and veranda - not my style as much and also enough time! good luck deciding and thanks for the comments recently!! :)

  6. I could write a lot here…but let's just say that I DITTO Tina ( The Enchanted Home) on everything she said!!! I should send you our ads we did with Southern Accents….there will never be a better magazine as much as I love Veranda! And Traditional Home! Southern accents cannot be beat! However…Hoffman Media is doing a tremendous job with their new magazines and I hope everyone will give them a try!

  7. I hope you will get a subscription to Southern Living! It is looking so good!!!! xo

  8. Hands down I like to have the paper mailed ones. I cannot wait to be able to hold Lonny in my hands! House Beautiful is my second fave.

  9. I am completely on board with the all white nurseries. I have two babies and let me tell you, their bedrooms are not the place I want them stimulated. It's for sleeping. Plus add in all the nonsense like blankets and lovies and toys left on the floor and books on the shelves and a basket full of colorful laundry and you can be certain there is plenty of color for that sweet baby to look at. Downstairs is where we keep toys and other things to stimulate them when they are awake. I adore her nursery!

Tell me somethin' good! I love your comments!

(i.e. Your Comment: what's up with the Biebs and Selena Gomez? My Reply: I don't know but it's keeping me up at night. He's so cryptic on Instagram, it's hard to really know)
